Sixth through eighth graders continue their touch typing practice with Mavis Beacon and other online programs that focus on drills for correct keying and accuracy. They are in lab on a daily basis and depending upon grade level additional emphasis is put on learning about the computer, networks, compatibility issues with other technology, and the windows environment. Internet and World Wide Web lessons focus on living online (etiquette), safety, browsers and search engines, researching online, evaluating good and bad websites, , and viruses- detection/prevention. Computer ethics are discussed; topics include integrity and confidentiality of data files, shareware, freeware, public domain, fair use and copyright regulations, and licensing. Further skills are developed in word processing, spreadsheet, data base, computer graphic, and presentation programs, specifically Microsoft Office products; Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Whenever possibly computer learning is tied to assignments within the classroom (i.e. 6th grade country reports are coordinated between the classroom teacher and the computer teacher). Thus, students learn about the computer, practice keyboarding, and reinforce classroom concepts while completing assignments in computer lab.
